Mental Health & Wellbeing
Mental health is as important as physical health, yet for many professional drivers, it remains one of the hardest issues to talk about.
Long periods alone, irregular hours, disrupted sleep, pressure to meet schedules, and time away from family can gradually take their toll.
For some, these pressures build quietly over time.
Understanding the reality
Professional driving can be isolating.
Many drivers work long hours with limited social contact, irregular routines, and little opportunity to decompress after demanding days.
These conditions do not reflect weakness they reflect the environment in which the job is done.
Recognizing that reality is the first step toward meaningful support.
Creating safe conversations
One of the biggest barriers to mental wellbeing is the fear of being judged, misunderstood, or seen as unable to cope.
The HGV Networking Group promotes a culture where:
- it is acceptable to talk
- asking for support is not seen as failure
- early conversation is encouraged
- silence is not mistaken for strength
Support works best when people feel safe to speak.
Working with trusted partners
The HGV Networking Group works in collaboration with Grassroots Suicide Prevention, a nationally recognised organisation providing evidence-based mental health and suicide prevention support.
Grassroots offers accessible resources, education, and tools designed to help individuals recognise warning signs, support others, and seek help when needed.
Their work supports our aim of promoting early awareness and practical support across the driving community.
Practical support and signposting
Mental wellbeing support does not begin at crisis point.
Early awareness, education, and access to trusted services can help prevent situations from escalating.
Drivers and those who support them are encouraged to seek help whenever it is needed.
If immediate help is needed
If someone is in immediate danger or distress, please contact emergency services or reach out to trusted support services such as:
- NHS 111
- your GP
- local crisis services
HELP IS AVAILABLE
Why this matters
Supporting mental wellbeing is not only about compassion it is also about safety.
Drivers who feel supported are more likely to:
- remain engaged with their work
- seek help early
- stay within the industry
- maintain focus and resilience
A healthier workforce benefits everyone!
Our approach
The HGV Networking Group does not provide counselling or crisis services.
Our role is to raise awareness, reduce stigma, promote trusted support, and encourage early conversation.
We believe prevention, understanding, and connection save lives.
A shared responsibility
Mental wellbeing is not solely an individual issue.
It is shaped by working environments, communication, respect, and culture.
Positive change happens when drivers, employers, families, and the wider industry work together.
